English or American Cocker spaniel? The English cocker is a lot smarter and easy to train, just get a dog training book and take tips from there. The American cocker is less smart, but should be able to be trained the same way
References :
The two best ways I have trained dogs are through treat training, show them how to do something then give them a treat when they succesfully do it, it shows them they did something good and they will eventually realize that doing the tricks is rewarded. The second one is through click training, go to you local pet store and ask for a dog clicker, there tiny and cheap. The clicker helps them learn that sounds can be affiliated with certain tricks such as lay and speak.
References :
I have trained dogs for the last three years.

cocker spaniels aren't really that bright in the first place. it takes a lot of time and effort to teach them or any dog new tricks. just google things like "training a cocker spaniel" or "how to train a dog new tricks"
References :
I have been using Frontline anti-tick shampoo and oatmeal soap on my dogs. The anti-tick shampoo kills the fleas and ticks, while oatmeal soap helps the skin and coat be moisturized.
References :
I do not use garbage shampoo's such as flea and tick on my dogs.
I get Advantage or Frontline from my vet and my property gets sprayed and limed for fleas and ticks.
References :
Best advice is to not allow a dog to run loose in tick infested areas.

Cocker Spaniels are known more for having ear mites, not ticks.

I've owned dogs for over 20 years, and never had a problem. Had only 3 ticks the whole time. Never used any anti flea and tick stuff.
References :
I think you should leave food, water, toys, and treats for the dog. This will keep him/ her busy and will take him/ her's mind off of you being gone.
Good luck with you cocker spaniel!
References :
8-9 hours is acceptable. I would provide chews and a radio or tv. Proper temps and water at all times.
Most shelters or breeders are not going to turn away a good pet owner because they have to work.
References :
Millions of dogs survive just fine being left alone while the owners work. (they need to pay bills). Not many of them could afford dog walkers, or daycare either. Just make sure it is well exercised before leaving for work and again after getting home. For a young puppy I would recommend an ex-pen set up so the dog has room to move and play with a couple of safe toys.
