I just got a male cocker spaniel yesterday and am wondering how much I should be feeding him each day. The breeder was feeding him about a cup of food a day- first in thirds three times a day and recently she started feeding him half a cup twice a day. To me, that’s a bit much since my 11 month old cocker spaniel (went with the ex when she left) was only eating 1 1/2 cups- 3/4 of a cup twice a day. He also seems a little bit overweight.
Obviously I’m making an appointment to see the vet at some point this week- I already left a message for them to call me with a time that fits in my schedule, but I’d like to know what I should be doing in the meantime.
Thanks
A puppy eats a lot of food. From birth up to six months of age, he’ll need to eat two to four times as much as an adult dog to support all that growth. A good rule of thumb (paw?) is that after his first week of life, when his weight doubles from what it was at birth, a puppy should gain one to two grams per pound of anticipated adult weight each day. This means that if your German Shepherd puppy weighs 75 pounds as an adult, he should gain three to five ounces per day as a puppy.

I feed my cocker mix about cup a day. Depends on his weight, Figure out his weight and then theres usually a chart on the dog food that tells you how much to feed according to his weight. Depends on how much exercise he's getting also. Edit my cocker is 13 so your puppy should probably get more food since hes growing.
