There are currently three types of no bark collars commonly used on dogs. They all give good results, but you might be wondering if using them is ethical. If you own a dog, you should know at least a bit about the type of no bark collar that you plan to use on your dog.
Citrus Spray Collars
There are no bark dog collars that spray the dog’s muzzle with citrus smell if the dog keeps barking. Because dogs really don’t like the smell of citrus, this can be very effective as a no bark collar. These collars usually give a hissing sound before releasing the citrus smell, giving the dog a chance to stop the barking and saving itself from the spray. These no bark collars are considered ethical by experts, as there is no pain involved, just a mild annoyance for the dog.
Sonic and Ultrasonic Dog Collars
Ultrasonic or sonic dog collars will emit a high pitched tone if the dog barks. It sounds to the dog very similar to the sound a dog’s whistle makes. Most humans can’t hear it or be annoyed by it, but dogs can and will stop barking once they realize that when they stop barking the high pitched tone goes away. Is this considered ethical by the experts? Yes. All they do is create a bit of annoyance to the dog. To get better results, don’t use this collar for long periods of time, as dogs can get used to the sound and just ignore it.
Electric No Bark Collars
These collars give the dog a small electrical shock when it barks. It isn’t truly dangerous, and can be compared to the shock you can get from static electricity. Once again, mostly just an annoyance – but this is the type of no bark collar that some people believe is unethical. The main complaint is that this collar actually has a physical stimulus to the dog. And well, some people think that’s not ok. However, these collars are very effective for reducing excessive barking, so take them at least into consideration.
To deter a dog from barking excessively, you can choose from no bark collars that use citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking. Most people have no problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea of an electrical shock makes them think that shock collars aren’t good for dogs. None of these methods are considered dangerous for dogs.
no bark collars are a great way to reduce excessive barking that isn’t related to your dog’s health. Although most people don’t have a problem with them, some of them think shock collars are unethical. Nevertheless, all no bark dog collars are perfectly safe.
