American Cocker Spaniel – Eats Non Stop – He Is 11 Years Old?

My American Cocker Spaniel will eat everything and anything. He is very hyper and feed the recommended doses and he is chunky. Is there anything thing out there that will resist his temptation for eating all the time.

PS – kids use to feed him table food when I was not looking for 11 years and now that they are older they've told me about all the food they've feed him. BAD KIDS!!!!

I've had spaniels all my life, and this latest one, he's a pig-dog!

NO people food.
Make it a strict rule.
it's for the health of the 11 yr old dog who is like a 77 yr old over wieght senior!!!

It's easy to put your dog on a diet, easier then putting people on one.

Just give the spaniel 1 cup of dry food only in the am,
and 1 cup of dry in the evening.

that's that.

the cocker will love you for it, and take it for a walk.

have a family meeting.
spaniels that are over wieght only live 12 yrs at the most, and they need walks, and NO PEOPLE FOOD!!!

buy milk bones for treats, 5 a day max!
buy charlie bears at www.traderjoes.com

believe me, your dog will eat dry food if that's all you provide.
they have senior over wieght food.

think of the health and welfare of the dog, and your kids happiness in the long run.

Stop feeding the recommended amount on the bag. The bag often recommends 2-3 times more food than the dog needs. For a cocker, a half cup twice a day of a quality kibble is enough.

Have you taken him to the vet? It's possible that he has worms; don't be scared they're not totally bad if you treat them. What happens is the worms some how get into the dog's system most of the time through ingestion (you dog ate them), but with a simple pill, the worms should be out in a few weeks or months. Also, it could be that you kids did stretch out his stomach with all the extra food you gave him, in this case he just needs a diet!

At 11 years old why try to stop behavior that has be on going for years. Give the poor dog a break and let it have the table scraps. If the table scraps haven't done any damage after all these years then chances are nothing is going to happen.

The dog is going to have to be taught not to beg at the table. And the family has to stop feeding him people food.

In a way, it's a good thing he is hyper: That means he has worked off SOME of the extra calories.

I would strongly recommend that he be seen by his vet to rule out any medical problems that may be starting. Good Luck.

Stop feeding him so much until he's regained a shape other than sausage. That causes other health problems, and if there's no food being given, he can't gain more weight.

Yes, stop feeding him! Dogs will eat and eat and eat, especially if you keep shoving food in their faces! So stop! Stick to a special diet of the same amount of dog food each meal time, and don't let him beg for or receive more.

PUt him on a diet. Worms in adult dogs do not cause ravenous appetite, but endochrine disease do. Overproduction of cortisone by the adrenals can cause ravenous appetite, increased thirst and urination, weight gain, hair loss and thin skin.
He may also just be a chow hound, but have it checked out by your vet.
